It's been a few years, but I've been to a couple of tourist type aquariums and seen some interesting species. There's an outdoor show near Niagara Falls, Ontario and an indoor aquarium on the US side.

Hopefully, good care is taken of the fish and animals at these places. Have you been to places like that?

I went to a place in Newborough Warren in Wales, but it was a very small set up. What is worse, I was in a wheelchair that day having dislocated my knee, so it wasn't much fun. I cannot remember a single thing as being outstanding.

I've seen trained whales and dolphins at the aquariums I've been to.

At Marineland in Ontario, there's also a game farm where they have reindeer. It's popular with children.

Sea World in San Diego CA is great. We've had a few problems with whales turning on trainers but they are wild animals..what can you expect? The shows are fantastic and the mana ray pool is so lovely- you can actually feed them!

I don't think I've heard of whales turning on trainers before, at least at Marineland in Niagara Falls. I assume it would have been on the regional news.

I wonder if there's something in particular that set them off in Sea World?

This really wasn't that long ago, less then a year. The trainer was working with a baby Shamu (they are all called Shamu there, it seems) and it jumped on her. Pretty scary- this happened about two months after I took my kids there.

I went to an aquarium when I was a child and I remember seeing the sharks and feeling as if i was in the water with them. It is an amazing thing to watch the coral and the fish not seem so confined just for show.

This thread reminds me of a story a couple of years ago about a whale giving birth in an aquarium in front of an audience. That must have been very interesting.

I forget where that happened.

Now that is something that I would seriously love to see. There is nothing more beautiful than birth, in humans or animals. I've been at a few kitten births-I would just love this.

Really?  Wow it would be much interesting, watching fish who will give birth in your own aquarium.  Do whales give birth like humans?

In a way, they do. It is amazing to watch- you can catch repeats of this event on the Discovery channel here in the states- not sure what the equivalent would be in Europe.

The one that I distinctly remember visiting is the Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. I probably visited when I was about nine or ten. I remember being fascinated, but slightly scared, about walking through the underwater glass tunnel.

I've also visited one in Wales - cannot for the life of me remember the name - and the aquarium at Fort Victoria on the Isle of Wight.
